Last January 07 (Saturday), Northern Mindanao experienced a morning-wide disruption of mobile and broadband services. The culprit? An accidental fiber cut by construction crew. Sheesh.

Mon Isberto, Smart spokesperson:

“We had two cable breaks in our fiber optic transmission network in the areas of Maramag and Butuan in northern Mindanao. One of these breaks was due to the accidental cutting of our fiber optic cable by a construction crew.”

The accident disrupted mobile and broadband services but Smart quickly deployed counter measures by rerouting network traffic. The incidence of delayed SMS arrival and the difficulty in placing voice calls were reduced.

Smart repair crews were deployed immediately. Voice, SMS and data services were normalized by around 3PM.
